Upper secondary — preparing for the baccalauréat

Subjects covered at upper secondary
All are open, and the diagnosis indicates which ones deserve the available time. A candidate who allocates work according to each subject's payoff gains more than one who splits it evenly — that is arithmetic, and it is what the revision plan applies.

The mark scheme before the syllabus
In upper secondary, a large share of the marks is won on the paper's expectations: a written justification, a checked unit, a question framed at the head of an essay. Working on method therefore pays faster than one more chapter, and the gain shows on the very first marked paper. It is counter-intuitive, and it is what the marked papers the tutor puts in the pupil's hands from session one make plain.

- MathematicsIn upper secondary the subject changes nature: you are no longer asked to apply but to prove. Many pupils who were solid before disengage at this transition, without anyone identifying it as a change of contract rather than a lack of effort.
- Physics and chemistryThe subject becomes quantitative and demands rigour in units and method. Marks are lost less on understanding than on execution: a forgotten unit invalidates sound reasoning.
- Natural sciencesThe subject requires holding together a large body of knowledge and an ability to analyse documents. Revising one without the other yields an average mark regardless of how much work was put in.
- French and philosophyThese papers assess not knowledge but the ability to build a written argument and sustain it over several pages. It is the most transferable skill of upper secondary, and the least methodically trained.
