Lower secondary — where gaps open up
This is when a pupil slips without anyone noticing: marks still hold, understanding no longer does. The tutor spots the gap before the report card.

When a pupil is stuck
The tutor does not repeat the lesson: it changes angle, offers an example, asks a question that moves things forward. It never gives an exercise answer — a pupil handed the solution learns nothing.
The signal not to miss
A secondary pupil keeping decent marks while saying they understand nothing is applying procedures without grasping them. That holds until chapters start combining — years 9 and 10 — then collapses at once. The report card will flag nothing before the fall. That is precisely the gap the tracking makes visible within weeks.

- MathematicsThe pupil can expand an expression and can solve an equation, but faced with a problem does not know which is being asked. The symptom is recognisable: they pass exercises within a chapter and fail the test that mixes chapters. This is not a memory problem, it is a recognition problem.
- FrenchThe pupil recites the past participle agreement rule and forgets it the moment they write. The reason is mechanical: applying a rule takes attention, and all their attention goes into forming ideas. Revising the rule once more changes nothing — they must proofread looking for one thing at a time.
- EnglishThe pupil mentally translates each sentence before producing it, which is too slow to hold a conversation. The block is worsened by fear of making a mistake in front of the class. The way out is not more grammar: it is listening volume and short spoken turns, with no audience.
- Life and earth sciencesThe pupil reproduces a diagram without being able to explain what it shows, and is stranded as soon as a question presents a new situation. The volume to retain feels crushing precisely because nothing links the pieces. Understanding a mechanism reduces what must be memorised.
- Physics and chemistryThe pupil understands the phenomenon and freezes when isolating a variable in a formula. The conclusion is that they dislike physics, when the problem is unconsolidated algebra. Reworking the physics chapter achieves nothing: you must go back to the source, in the other subject.
- History and geographyThe pupil dumps knowledge with no question and no structure, and the assessment penalises form as much as substance. The useful work is not to learn more but to learn to organise: one idea, one example, one linking sentence — repeated until it becomes automatic.
