Early science — Primary

The child recites « water boils at one hundred degrees » without ever linking the sentence to anything observable. The knowledge stays a word, and vanishes in three weeks. A scientific idea not tested against an observation is not understood, it is memorised.

What is at stake in this subject

The aim is not to accumulate knowledge but to install a method: observe, describe, explain, check. It is the only point in schooling where you can learn to be wrong with no marks at stake.

  • Living things and their environment
  • Matter, states and changes
  • The human body and health
  • Asking a question and answering it by observation

They learn the answers instead of understanding the questions

How the tutor works on it

The tutor asks for a prediction before any explanation: « what do you think will happen? ». A wrong prediction followed by an observation is worth ten correct explanations received passively.

  • It changes angle when an explanation does not land
  • It never gives an exercise answer
  • It has the pupil check rather than correcting them
  • It goes back to the missing prerequisite, even from an earlier year

Parents' questions

Is equipment needed at home?

No. The observations use water, salt, a bottle, a plant — whatever is in any kitchen. An activity assuming laboratory equipment excludes most of the families it is meant for.
