Early primary — the code first, then meaning
Two learnings overlap: recognising the signs, then drawing meaning from them. The first becomes automatic through closely spaced repetition, the second starts the day the first stops costing effort. Holding that order makes the next eight years comfortable.
What changes at this transition
Two learnings overlap: recognising the signs, then drawing meaning from them. The first becomes automatic through closely spaced repetition, the second starts the day the first stops costing effort. Holding that order makes the next eight years comfortable.
- Decoding becomes steady, then fast
- The child retells in their own words what they have just read
- Numbers are counted, compared and broken down
- A two-step instruction is followed to the end
- Handwriting becomes legible without a tense grip
They read fast and retell little
The most useful signal of the whole elementary years, and the easiest to miss: the child produces the sounds perfectly, so the adult concludes they read. All their effort goes into decoding, and none is left for meaning. The remedy fits in one question asked after every read — « tell me the story » — and in very short sessions repeated daily. Fluency comes from frequency, and meaning comes with it.
What the tutor works on first
- 01
Fluency, every day
A few minutes of reading aloud every day rather than one long session on Saturday. Frequency produces the result.
- 02
The retelling after the read
The child retells, the tutor listens and spots the gap between what is pronounced and what is understood.
- 03
Number before arithmetic
A concrete situation is described first, the operation comes after. That is what holds when the first word problems arrive.
- 04
Twenty-minute sessions
An eight-year-old's attention is measured in minutes. The session ends while it is still working.
Subjects covered at this stage
All are included in the same subscription: a pupil moving from a maths difficulty to a reading difficulty changes subject without changing plan. The cycle governs, never an add-on option.

Parents' questions
At what age does support make sense?
As soon as reading has begun, for a mechanical reason: this is the period where a few daily minutes produce the most effect, because automaticity is being built. Support started here works on a foundation under construction rather than on a gap that has settled in.
We speak another language at home.
That is the situation of a large share of families, and early bilingualism remains a lasting asset. It calls for more exposure to written French and sustained attention to vocabulary: that is where the tutor spends most time, and where the gain shows fastest.
