Hosting an apprentice who contributes from month one
A useful apprentice requires three things settled before arrival: a real assignment, a named tutor and a rhythm compatible with their studies. The catalogue holds 19 programmes designed to be taken while holding a job, which makes work-study workable without disrupting a department.
The three conditions settled before arrival
Onboarding is prepared in an hour and determines the whole year. Organisations that settle these three items before arrival get a real contribution from month one; those that settle them afterwards spend the first quarter improvising.
- A real assignment, written in one sentence, whose result someone is waiting for
- A named tutor, available a few hours a month and briefed on their role
- A work-study rhythm aligned to the course calendar, known to the department
- A workstation and access ready on arrival day
- A one-month review, where the assignment sharpens against the facts
Programmes compatible with time in the company
These programmes are designed to be taken while holding a job: their weekly load is published on each page and the rhythm fits time spent in the company. The catalogue holds 19 of them in total, plus 8 self-paced programmes.

Shared tracking, tutor and institution
Work-study works when both sides see the same thing. The company tutor follows the pathway's progress and flags the competencies practised on the job; the institution follows achievements and adapts support. Three reviews are enough to hold the year.
- 01
Entry review
The assignment, the competencies it draws on, those the pathway will cover. One hour, tutor and academic lead.
- 02
Mid-point review
What has been produced, what remains to work on. The assignment adjusts here, on facts observed on the job.
- 03
Exit review
The blocks validated, the competencies demonstrated in situation, the hiring outlook where one exists.
Questions from host companies
What assignment should we give in year one?
A real, bounded assignment whose result serves someone: building a tracking sheet that was missing, reworking a register, documenting a procedure, running a short campaign. These have three qualities: they finish, they can be shown, and they teach how the organisation works better than observation does.
How much time must the tutor give?
A few hours a month, concentrated in the first weeks then spread out. The tutor benefits from short support on the four tutoring moves: break down, hand over early, question, record. It is a few hours' investment that changes the apprentice's contribution.
Can we prepare a hire at the end?
Yes, and the exit review serves exactly that purpose. Validated blocks and competencies demonstrated in situation give a decision base no recruitment interview provides: you have seen the person work for months, on your own cases, with measurable results.
How do we host several apprentices in one department?
By giving them distinct, complementary assignments, and by naming one tutor per person rather than one tutor for the group. A monthly group review is a useful addition: apprentices answer each other on questions that would otherwise all go to the same tutor.
