They apply a rule without knowing when it applies
The pupil can expand an expression and can solve an equation, but faced with a problem does not know which is being asked. The symptom is recognisable: they pass exercises within a chapter and fail the test that mixes chapters. This is not a memory problem, it is a recognition problem.
What the tutor does with your child
The tutor works by sorting before solving: « what kind of problem is this? » before « how do we do it? ». It also surfaces missing prerequisites from an earlier year rather than replaying today's lesson, because that is almost always where the cause lies.

Parents' questions
Their marks are fine but they say they understand nothing. Should I worry?
Yes, and it is the most useful signal you can get. Decent marks obtained by mechanical application hold until chapters start combining, usually in year 9 or 10. Tackling it while the marks still hold is vastly easier than after the fall.
