French Lower secondary

French conditions every other subject: a pupil who does not understand a question fails at mathematics without having any difficulty in mathematics. It is the subject whose lag is most invisible, because it shows up elsewhere.

They know the rules and still make the mistakes

The pupil recites the past participle agreement rule and forgets it the moment they write. The reason is mechanical: applying a rule takes attention, and all their attention goes into forming ideas. Revising the rule once more changes nothing — they must proofread looking for one thing at a time.

What the tutor does with your child

The tutor has them write first and correct afterwards, never both at once. It trains targeted proofreading: one pass for agreements, one for punctuation — rather than a general reread that catches nothing.

  • It changes angle the moment an explanation misses
  • It leaves the answer to the pupil and stays alongside until they find it
  • It has the result checked by a second route
  • It goes back to the missing prerequisite, even one from an earlier year
  • It keeps the concept open until the pupil restates it in their own words

Parents' questions

Should they be made to read novels?

Regular reading is the most powerful lever, on one condition: that it is not experienced as punishment. A text the pupil chose, however modest, achieves more than an imposed classic abandoned on page ten. Volume read matters more than the prestige of the book.
